GOALS AND OBJECTIVES

  1. To introduce workshop attendees to the expanding body of research about assessing student learning and the relationship between assessment of learning and accountability, as synthesized in National Research Council reports such as Knowing What Students Know: The Science and Design of Educational Assessment; Assessment in Support of Instruction and Learning: Bridging the Gap Between Large-Scale and Classroom Assessment; Learning and Understanding: Improving Advanced Study of Mathematics and Science in U.S. High Schools; Classroom Assessment and the National Science Education Standards; and High Stakes: Testing for Tracking, Promotion, and Graduation.

  2. To provide attendees with guidance on the implications of research on human learning on approaches to assessing student learning.

  3. To help attendees learn how to apply research on assessment and accountability to their partnership environments by providing opportunities through discussions and breakout sessions to explore aspects of this research more deeply.

Workshop attendees will address these Goals and Objectives during the workshop through

  1. An introductory hands-on, interactive activity on assessing student learning at both the K-12 and undergraduate levels. Subsequent facilitated discussions throughout the workshop will allow attendees to recognize more deeply the issues and opportunities associated with various types of assessments of learning.

  2. Presentations, demonstrations, and facilitated discussions of assessment principles with experts who have served on the authoring committees for those reports and others who are engaged in translating assessment research into the improvement of curricula, instruction, and professional development programs for faculty.

  3. Breakout sessions in which attendees will be able to select aspects of assessment and accountability that they will explore in greater detail with the experts who will serve as workshop facilitators.

  4. Time reserved for MSP teams to discuss what they have learned throughout the workshop and how those principles can be applied to their own partnership environments. Experts will be available to participate in these team discussions.

Workshop attendees will prepare for the workshop by

  1. Receiving 14 NRC reports on assessment, accountability, and human learning on a CD-ROM after registering for the workshop.

  2. Developing with other members of their MSP team a series of issues and challenges that they face in assessment of student learning and accountability. These issues will be sent to the NRC and distributed to the expert presenters and facilitators prior to the workshop so that facilitated discussions and breakout sessions can specifically address some of these issues.
